Richard Blair, son of world-famous anti-totalitarian writer George Orwell (whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair), visited the site of the clinic where his father had been treated during the Spanish Civil War. Orwell, an “old-fashioned socialist,” traveled to Barcelona as a journalist in December of 1936 to find out more about the Civil War
When George Orwell returned to Barcelona for the third time, on June 20th, 1937, he discovered that the Spanish secret police were after him. He had been forced to return to the front in order to have his discharge papers countersigned and, in his absence, the Communists had initiated a purge of their perceived enemies. It was a conflict which no one saw with more clarity than English author Eric Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell.
